Matt Scribner named new Ride Director for Tevis Cup

The Western States Trail Foundation would like to formally announce longtime Tevis supporter, Matt Scribner, as the new Ride Director for the Tevis Cup! He will replace 15-year director Chuck Stalley, who retired after this year’s event.

Matt Scribner was born and raised in Auburn, California and his connection to the Tevis Trail and the Western States 100 Mile Ride is life-long. As a child Matt rode the trail with pack horses and in 1994 earned the first of his seven Tevis buckles.

Matt’s professional life has been devoted to horses. With the exception of serving in the US Army for four years, Matt has been a farrier and trainer focused on endurance horses. For the last twenty years he, and his wife Leigh, have worked side by side to develop safe and sound endurance horses and to help mentor new riders so that they too can successfully navigate the challenges of endurance riding.

Horse rescued by helicopter after rider thrown during Tevis Cup endurance ride

TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — A horse was stranded high in the Granite Chief Wilderness in the Tahoe National Forest after its rider was thrown during the Tevis Cup endurance ride was rescued Saturday in a coordinated helicopter operation involving multiple Northern California emergency response teams.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said its' helicopter unit responded August 1 to a request for a large animal rescue in the Granite Chief Wilderness after a rider was bucked off during the annual 100-mile Tevis Cup endurance ride.

Authorities said the horse became stranded at an elevation of about 7,200 feet in rugged terrain that was inaccessible by foot or vehicle. A GPS unit attached to the horse’s saddle provided responders with its exact location, the sheriff’s office said...

Jeremy Reynolds and his horse, Treasure, won the 2026 Tevis Cup on Saturday night, leading a successful 70th running of the historic 100-mile endurance ride through California’s Sierra Nevada despite intense heat that tested both horses and riders. Reynolds crossed the finish line in Auburn at 10:52 p.m., completing the course in 15 hours and 37 minutes to earn his fifth Lloyd Tevis Cup title. The James Ben Ali Haggin Cup, awarded annually to the horse judged to be in the best condition among the top finishers, went to CH Fancy Finesse, known as “Finn,” ridden by junior competitor Tierney Beloberk...

Junior rider Tierney Beloberk of Loomis, California finished tenth aboard CH Fancy Finesse in Saturday’s 100-mile Tevis Cup. The pair were awarded the Haggin Cup next morning (Best Condition).

Tierney has now completed 4 Tevis Cups. The 10-year-old Shagya-Arabian mare CH Fancy Finesse (aka Finn) had one Tevis finish under her girth, a fifth place finish in 2022 with Cameron Holzer Gaytko.

Jeremy Reynolds and the 16-year-old Arabian mare won the 100-mile Tevis Cup for the third time on Saturday night. It was Jeremy’s sixth win and tenth finish, and Treasure’s third win and her seventh finish.
